Coincidence

Today I picked up a book of poetry and idly flipped to page 51, because 51 is my number. Lo and behold, the poem on that page happened to be chock-full of musical references.

This post is about patterns.

Have you ever listened to a piece of music for the umpteenth time (or maybe just the second) and suddenly noticed that a section in the middle uses the same theme as the beginning, but you never noticed before because the composer does something totally and beautifully different with it? Do you know the shiver that runs down your spine when you get it?

Have you ever read a book over again and suddenly realized the deeper meaning the author was pointing to in a passage that you only understood superficially the first time? Do you know the thrill of comprehension when you see it?

Has that ever happened to you in real life?

Even if my worldview didn't tell me so, I would come away from my everyday existence with an uncanny sense that there is a pattern to my life and to the universe. Most of the time I don't see the pattern - as Lewis said, it's written in letters too large for me to read - but every once in a while, I get a glimpse of the big picture. Every once in a while, a tiny corner of the curtain is pulled aside, and I see some connection between two things that seem totally unrelated on my normal level of comprehension. I still don't understand why they're related, because I can only see an infinitely tiny portion of the real pattern, but I can see it is Designed, not random.

This happens to me over and over again, and it gives me a sense of awe every time.

hmmm....I agree, mostly. and I definitely know what you're talking about, like with music and with books.

when my mom read the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for the first time she wasn't a Christian yet. so she pretty much missed out on the whole thing. then she re-read it as an adult years later.

but do you really think you would come away with that idea so imprinted on your conscience if your worldview was the opposite of what it is?
I'm not saying you would or wouldn't, I just think about so many people who refuse to believe in a Designer even if He slaps them in the face with His Design.

That was a beautiful post.

And yes! Patterns. Just like you said, the same things happen over and over, just in variation. That happens with my spiritual "status" I guess you could call it. I realise, I love, I forget, I remember, and praise God. And each time around the merry go round I catch another glimpse of the screnery wizzing by.

You really do learn something new everyday.

Thanks for this post Crystal. (Hint hint: write me!)

This is an awesome post. If I could put my thoughts into words it might sounds something like this. But since I didn't and I can't, this poem is perfectly sufficient for me.

Thanks, people. I'm glad this resonates with you. It's good to know that someone else gets it.

And yes, Kacy, I think I'd still feel that way even if I wasn't a Christian. Sometimes I wonder if those who deny it really do know, deep down, but I can't speak for them, only for me. I know there are too many weird 'coincidences' like the one I mentioned in my life for everything to be chance. It's almost spooky sometimes.

And Lindy, I would dearly love to write you, but I'm the one without much spare time now (alas, busy, but not feeling challenged, if you know what I mean), so I try to write in a generally available format (i. e. here) when I can. Much love always and I'll try to write you on the weekend!

I wonder if it's just everyone being different too. Some of us really have more faith than others - the answer is evident to us in all of creation.

but in the Bible (I think it's in 1st Peter) it says that some people will be willingly ignorant of the truth. they're so blinded by their own evolutionary paridigm that they can't see the evidence by itself.

so I guess some people might see it, but others might not.

I have to remember where in the Bible it says that each person is "dealt a measure of faith". So those who have more can encourage those who have less.

Wow, this is a really really cool post. I love what you have to say, you articulated that difficult concept so well! I do know what you mean- although I haven't thought it out quite so far.

Thanks, Emily!

I just want to restate my reply to Kacy: I think, if I were brought up in an Athiest/Evolutionist point of view, I would naturally gravitate toward a Theist or a Dualist religion, or else lose myself totally in a fantasy world based on one of those viewpoints.
